OpenAI has just rolled out an upgraded version of GPT-4 Turbo, one of the models powering the conversational experience of ChatGPT. This enhanced version allows the artificial intelligence (AI) tool to engage in more natural dialogue. It’s now exclusively available to premium users subscribed to ChatGPT’s Plus, Team, or Enterprise plans.

OpenAI announced that the latest model “gpt-4-turbo-2024-04-09” boasts improvements in writing, mathematics, logical reasoning, coding, and an updated knowledge base.

This latest update was trained on publicly available data up until December 2023, whereas the previous version could only use materials up to April 2023. OpenAI stated in a message on X:

When writing with ChatGPT [using the new GPT-4 Turbo], responses will be more direct, less verbose, and will employ a more conversational tone.

However, this update might worsen the ongoing issue where writers end up sounding like AI, even though they authored the articles themselves.

Writers Non-native English Speakers May Lose Their Jobs

On April 7th, Paul Graham, co-founder of the influential startup accelerator Y Combinator, concluded that an email containing the word “delve” was probably written using artificial intelligence.

Graham argued that this word is not commonly used in everyday conversation, but many Africans – mostly Nigerians – objected, saying they use this word often. Since then, the conversation has shifted to how people from different parts of the world use English vocabulary differently.

Graham’s message also implies that writers for whom English is a second language could lose their jobs because their work might be deemed too similar to content created by artificial intelligence.

New Features of ChatGPT

The artificial intelligence (AI) giant OpenAI has removed the requirement for users to create an account to access the widely used generative AI tool, ChatGPT3.5.

On April 1st, OpenAI announced that they will no longer require ChatGPT users to register in order to “facilitate the exploration of artificial intelligence potential.” However, users without accounts will be unable to store their interaction history. This feature will be rolled out gradually across all countries, starting with the USA.

AI developers are considering the cancellation of the ChatGPT registration requirement as a catalyst for developing new Large Language Models (LLMs). However, many others express concern about the surrounding use cases.

According to OpenAI estimates, ChatGPT has a weekly active user base of over 100 million people worldwide.

This number is expected to grow, considering that many individuals who previously hesitated to share personal information with a corporation like OpenAI can now use ChatGPT with relative anonymity.

It’s important to note that while ChatGPT-3.5 is not currently the most powerful “free” generative AI tool on the market, BuzzFeed data analyst Max Wolfe believes this move is OpenAI’s attempt to keep people from turning to competitors.

According to Hugging Face, ChatGPT-3.5 ranks 16th in the world in terms of its capabilities. Some other free generative artificial intelligence tools that perform better include Anthropic’s Claude S and Google DeepMind’s Gemini Pro. This update was followed by the April 10th launch of new models in the OpenAI API, including GPT-4 Turbo with Vision, which incorporates image recognition features.

More Info:

According to documentation on its website, OpenAI quietly updated the training data set for its GPT-4 Turbo to be current as of December 2023. The update was implemented to reduce what developers call “laziness” in the model, where it fails to accomplish the tasks assigned to it.
